NLP was developed in the 1970s by Richard Bandler (a mathematician) and John Grinder (a linguist) who developed it as a study Human Excellence and how to ‘model’ that excellence.
NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
‘Neuro’ relates to our brain and nervous system which regulates our body, its movements, functions and responses. Our nervous system receives and processes our daily experience through the five senses; sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell.
‘Linguistic’ relates to language and how we communicate with ourselves and others. It refers to verbal or non-verbal communication systems whereby we take internal and external information, code it, order it and give it meaning.
‘Programming’ refers to how we are programmed (by ourselves or others) in our responses.
NLP describes how we can use our minds and language to program our behaviour in the successful pursuit of our goals.
It provides many useful tools for the development of excellence in our behaviour, and it also provides a system of empowering beliefs and presuppositions.
The brain is an amazing organ capable of oh so many things. Isn’t it amazing to think that you can develop a phobia of say, spiders, instantly perhaps through just one unfortunate experience with a spider? And your brain is so powerful that you never, ever, ever forget that you have that phobia! (And you think you have a bad memory?!!)
With a phobia like that you are never in a situation where a spider is crawling on you and then after a minute or so of looking at it you say ‘Shoot, I forgot I’m terrified of these things’ and leap up. No – one instant of experience can lead to a life time of instant responses…talk about programming!
So likewise NLP can use similar programming to quickly remove a phobia of spiders or elevators or snakes or whatever. It can also be used to overcome a myriad of other fears such as public speaking, fear of dogs, fear of flying etc.
Apart from overcoming fears, NLP can help in many, many areas of life. For example, you can use it to help alleviate food cravings to help with weight loss or you can use it to help motivate you to exercise, get up early etc., etc.
Here at LifeBoss NLP is offered to clients via various exercises and tools to help them achieve their goals in the quickest and easiest manner possible.
